Stroke / CVA
Figures show that on average 2 out of 1,000 people are affected by a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), also known as a stroke. This makes it one of the most common causes of long-term disability in the Western world, which means that there are millions of people who have to live with the consequences of a stroke.
Far-reaching consequences
The consequences of a stroke are far-reaching and vary from person to person. 
 
Consequences which occur in approximately 80% of those affected by a stroke are:
  • Spasticity
  • Paresis
  • Pain
  • Edema
  • Contractures
  • Skin problems
  • Limitations in arm and/or leg skills.
Impairments in daily life

Over 70% of patients who survive a stroke experience impairments in carrying out activities in daily life. Of all Stroke survivors:

  • 44% are mildly impaired
  • 21% are moderately impaired
  • 16% are severely impaired
  • 19% are very severely impaired

Stroke or CVA is the most common cause of disability in the Western world.
