Cost effectiveness
An economic analysis of the NESS H200
In March 2003, Medtap International carried out an independent study into economic aspects of the use of the NESS H200 in chronic CVA patients. After all, as well as effectiveness, the efficiency of a treatment depends on the costs incurred.
Objective of the study
The objective of this study was to determine the effect on total treatment costs when the NESS H200 is used for rehabilitation after stroke. As the starting point for this analysis, two groups were chosen for which the NESS H200 was indicated. These were defined on the basis of the Modified Ashworth Scale:
  • relatively serious patients with a score of 4 or 5 and a non-functional upper extremity (group 1)
  • relatively ’mild’ patients with a score of 2 (1-3) and some active mobility (group 2)
Hypothesis
This study was based on the following hypothesis: the extra costs incurred by the NESS H200 treatment will be entirely or partially compensated for by cost savings achieved through a reduction in the costs of other treatment components, such as medication and physiotherapy. Moreover, NESS H200 training could also yield cost savings outside the immediate medical environment. For example through a reduced requirement for home help, modification to the living and working environment, or a reduction in absence from work.
Results and Conclusion

The purchase costs of the NESS H200 are largely ‘earned back’ through cost savings. These cost savings are realised through reduced use of other components of the regular treatment of patients in the chronic post-CVA phase. In particular, the reduced demand for medication to combat spasticity and pain, as well as a reduced need for physiotherapy, can lead to significant cost savings. In addition, savings in other fields may also be relevant, particularly within the medical sector and possibly also in the patient’s personal sphere. Given the limitations of this study, the latter has not been investigated. If we accept the assumptions on which the calculations of this study were based, we may conclude that prescribing the NESS H200 is justified from a health-economic perspective.
